Calligraphy layouts: Planning projects

- Now that you can write using a variety of nib sizes, you might want to plan a project of your own. These are some examples of some fun and useful projects you might want to try: An invitation, a banner, a thank you, a poster, or a quotation that inspires you. Each of these started out with an idea, some text, and a plan for how the finished piece would look, including its size and shape, whether it would be an original piece of calligraphy, or whether it would be reproduced, making multiple copies. Every year I design a calligraphic keepsake around the holidays, which I send to family and friends and especially to my fellow calligraphers around the world. I've been exchanging keepsakes with them for decades. I'd like to take you through my planning process. These are exactly the same steps you can use for your own projects.
