Engage in self-direction

- Creating an environment in which employees can self-direct is a great way to respect the people that you've hired, especially considering you probably hired them for their ability to think and make things happen. In this type of environment, you move away from mechanisms that promote micromanagement and implement others that allow safe self-direction by the people doing the work. Self-direction means that people can come into work, know what should be worked on, and what to do next when that thing is done. We want them to know what to do when a problem arises and give them the power to do it. And we want to let them decide the best way to do it, within boundaries of course, because they have the expertise. When workers can self-direct, it frees up the previous task manager's time so they can do other more challenging activities that have longer-lasting impacts, such as helping to create a self-directing environment.
