- By this point, we've established that you can't make perfect plans in a complex environment. So to avoid costly bad decisions, it's wise to commit to a decision at the right time. Not too early or too late, but at the last responsible moment, especially if that decision is irreversible. The last responsible moment is the moment in which the cost of further delay outweighs any value you might gain by deferring it. Deferring commitment until the last responsible moment isn't a clever procrastination technique. It is a way to ensure that decisions are only made when there's enough information available to make a good decision. Whether it's a decision about a particular technology or exactly how you'll accommodate a customer need within the product. Making a commitment too early can be limiting at best and disastrous at worst. There is no getting around the fact that some decisions have to be made upfront so that any work can begin at all.
