- Context switching, the act of switching back and forth between our work items, takes up time. There's the time it takes to ramp our minds and our environments down from what we were doing, and then the time to ramp them up to the new thing we're switching to. Over time, context switching can amount to a significant cost to the organization. A few years ago, I needed to get some information from my team to find out exactly how much context switching was costing us. How often are you interrupted each day, whether for a meeting or to help someone out for any reason? - 10 times. - Seven times. - Five times. - Okay, and each time you're interrupted, how long does it take you to mentally ramp down from the task that you were working on and fully ramp up to the new one? - Depends; something easy, maybe 10 minutes altogether.
