Brainstorming and planning your project

- Before we start modeling, let's talk about the project we're working on. One of the reasons I think a trophy makes an excellent beginner project is that there's so much variety and room for creativity. Now, before I get started, I like to sketch my ideas. Now, don't worry; you don't need to be an artist. Drawing is really just a form of record keeping. Use your drawing for reference while you work in 3D. Think about your audience or recipient. What are you celebrating? What types of symbols, logos, or shapes will help get your ideas across? While you're sketching, just concentrate on drawing basic shapes. Don't worry too much about exact measurements or getting everything right up front, but you might want to think about key measurements. For example, my 3D printer has an overall height restriction of 155 millimeters. If I want to print my trophy in one piece, I'll need to make sure it's smaller than that. Use a ruler for reference so you can keep scale in mind as you model in 3D. Lastly, look for inspiration. Check out images of other trophies. There's so much variety in the different kinds of shapes. You can look for forms that will be easy or challenging to replicate, depending on your skill level. All right, that's it! Let's get started.
