What is a learning assessment?

- [Instructor] In this course we'll focus specifically on learning assessments, so what is a learning assessment? A learning assessment is a method to measure how much of the knowledge and skills a learner has acquired during a course of study. There are two types of assessments, formative and summative. A formative learning assessment occurs during a course. It allows both the learner and the instructor to gauge how well progress is being made and to make any needed adjustments. It is a low-stakes assessment in that it's not necessary to formally record grades. When used most effectively with timely and effective feedback, it provides the learner with a method to self-evaluate his or her own progress. A summative learning assessment typically occurs at the end of a course. It's an assessment that's used to determine how well a learner did in the course.
