- [Narrator] So far, we've defined what learning assessments are, as well as discussed the differences between formative and summative learning assessments. The distinctions are the most common mistake that prevents learning assessments from being effective. So, to be absolutely clear, here's a quick summary of the terminology of learning assessments and the context in which we'll be discussing them. Formative, a learning assessment that is for learning. Summative, a learning assessment to grade learning. Evaluation, for our purposes, this is the same as a summative learning assessment. Low-stakes, the grade is not recorded or the grade is average in such a way that the stakes are lowered. High-stakes, the grade carries significant weight and is recorded and reported. Feedback, the communication between the instructor and student about which areas are going well and which areas may need more focus.
