Reshaping using pivots

Tableau works best analyzing data when it's in a tall, narrow auto normalized table structure. If your table is isn't a normalized structure, it's in a wide format with lots of columns, you can reshape that using a pivot. Pivot will let you change from a cross tab into a column table and that turns columns into rows. So let's look at an example of this where we're going to reshape some of the Olympic medal data that we used earlier. In this example, we've already got a flow going. I've got six files, all joined together. I've imported them and I've combined them all in a union and then I've gone and performed some clean steps. So we have the year, the ranking, country, and the number of gold medals, silver medals, bronze, and the total number of medals that each country won for each of the Olympics in that particular year. Now what I want to do is, I want to combine the gold, silver, and bronze fields together into a single column and have a count of each of those records. I want to…
