- [Narrator] In this example here, we're gonna look at the global vehicle sales data that you can find in your exercise folder. Now, this is an example of a wide data source. If we take a look at it, we can see that we have regions in one column, and then we have the sales for each of our years in the other columns. This is an example of cross tab. Now, one advantage of this format of data is for data entry. If we wanted to add another year, it's just a case of adding another column and adding the values in. That makes it real easy with data entry, but in terms of reporting or visualizing the data, it makes it quite tricky. If we add regions to our sheet and then say the year 2005, we can see here are the sales for 2005. If we then want to add additional years, we can add them in. It's quite difficult to see any kind of trend or any relationship between the two. In order to create a nicer visualization, we're gonna need to reshape the data, and the way we do that is pivoting.
