Parse strings into dates and other data types
- [Instructor] It's difficult to transfer data between programs and maintain the data's data type. In particular dates can be difficult to recognize. Tableau 10.2 introduced built in capabilities to recognize dates stored as numbers or string values though, which makes your task a lot easier. My sample file is the Date Parse Tableau Workbook. In sheet one you can see that I have order dates and then the number of orders for each of those days. One thing to note though, is that if you look over in the dimensions panel, you'll see the order date is listed as a text field. That's what ABC means, rather than a date. The reason that's the case is that there is a nonstandard way of writing the dates in the field. So you can see here that it has the year, followed by the two digit month, followed by the two digit day. And by the way if you're going to do that, write the year, the month and then the day, this is the correct way to do it. And the reason is that the dates will sort in calendar…
