- [Narrator] Tableau stores data using data types, such as numbers and dates. To identify both a data's characteristics, and to let the program know what it can do with the values contained in a field of a specific data type. In this movie, I'll describe the data types available to you, and also show you how to convert values to strings or text if necessary. There are four basic types of data that you can use in Tableau. And they are the string, date slash date time, number and Boolean. I'll start by describing strings, which are characters enclosed in single or double quotes. And you can see here that one example might be first edition, which would be in double quotes, or revised, which was in single quotes. The Tableau programming team allowed you to use either double quotes or single quotes, because other programming languages and scripting languages either require, or allow double quotes, single quotes, or both.
