- I remember once working with a client, a large government department, to assess the cost effectiveness of their accounts payable and receivable functions. Now, in this particular case, the client believed that the number of transactions processed per month per employee just wasn't high enough. Their view was that should this be proven correct, it may actually be more efficient and effective to have these functions outsourced. But I needed granular data from their transaction systems to help answer this problem. Now, you might be wondering exactly what we mean by granular data. Well, data granularity refers to the level of detail that data is provided. If data isn't granular or detailed enough, it can actually be impossible to answer the problem at hand with any level of confidence.
