Join Joel Bradley for an in-depth discussion in this video Lights and camera controls, part of Substance Designer Essential Training (2017).
- [Instructor] Our next menu item light…gives us the ability, if we just open that up,…to both edit and reset the lights in our 3D view.…Now, for the most part, our 3D view is being lit…via the HDRI that, by default, is set up…as the environment in our scene.…But of course, there may be times when we would want…to check out how our material looks under more specific…lighting conditions.…So, maybe those found in our game level…that our texture will help populate.…Now, Substance Designer keeps its lighting settings…from session to session.…
Let's just click the reset option just to be certain…that we are all starting on the same page as it were.…And then, come to the display menu.…Now, we will be discussing this menu some more later on,…but for now, we can just click the lights option…in order to see exactly where the lights app is located…in the scene.…After which, we can come to the lights menu…and click the edit option.…We have a number of lights listed here,…but for now, we're interested in just the point one…

8/25/2017Instructor Joel Bradley begins with an overview of a prebuilt substance graph, demonstrating the strengths and nondestructive workflow of Substance Designer, and walking through basics such as navigating the Substance Designer interface, adjusting important preferences, importing meshes and maps, and using the 2D, 3D, and Graph views. He then moves onto the large array of essential "atomic" nodes in Substance Designer, including the Blend, Curve, Slope Blur, Normal, Gradient, and Water Level nodes. These nodes comprise the heart of the Substance Designer workflow. Then learn how to create a custom panorama from scratch, and explore more advanced topics such as MDL materials, functions, and FX maps. Finally, Joel closes out the course by putting a substance to use. Learn about the advantages of using a published substance file (SBSAR) over hard-coded bitmaps for in-game materials, and see how to import a substance package into a game engine such as Unreal.
