- [Instructor] Let's learn about semi-parametric survival analysis. Often simply referred to as Cox regression, the Cox Proportional-Hazard model is one of the most commonly used regression models in survival analysis. A key disadvantage of the previous nonparametric analysis is that we were unable to control for other covariates. Whilst one can produce separate nonparametric analysis by different categorical values, it is not possible to control for the influence of other variable such as age in a regression setup. Parametric analysis can do this, but puts a more rigid constraint on how time is treated. Cox regression tries to offer a halfway house between both types of methodologies. By first estimating a baseline hazard function non-parametrically and then assuming that covariates shift this function proportionately up or down.
