Join Brian Wood for an in-depth discussion in this video Working with content blocks, part of Squarespace 7 Essential Training.
- Adding content to your pages is made pretty easy by Squarespace content blocks. Now, content blocks are the foundation of our website and each of these blocks, that you'll see in a second here, is designed to allow you to add a specific type of content. And they're separated into basic groups as you'll soon see. In this video, I simply want to explore what content blocks are, and how to add them and work with them. So, if you come over to the left here, you should see all of your pages. I'm going to collapse all these up here. Why don't you come to About Us.
This is kind of a simple page. There's not a lot going on. We can see we know design right there. Go ahead and scroll down, and you will see that we have this Page Content area. This is where the most of the bulk of our content is going to go. You'll also see EDIT, and we'll see, this is interesting, REMOVE BANNER IMAGE is here as well. As well as SETTINGS. We've already seen these. Why don't you click on EDIT. And we're about to edit the page content. It's going to take us into this mode here to be able to edit it. And then you're going to see here Editing 'About The Design Company', which I kind of think is useful.
And SAVE and CANCEL. Now right here you're going to see, well, Write here... and it's going to say, "Go ahead and start writing." Just go ahead and type in, put your cursor in there, and type in About Us. Hit a return. And you'll notice that we can start typing here. And if you put your cursor in About Us, or select it, we can change the formatting like we saw earlier. Heading 2, Heading 1, etcetera. And the we can say, About Us, "This is the content." And then we can put in our content right here, for instance.
We'll put in a little more text a little bit later on. I'm not trying to show you how this works, but go ahead and select this. Instead of Heading 2, what we can do is just say Normal. Now you'll notice that as I'm moving my cursor around we're seeing these weird little drops show up. This is how we insert or work with blocks. Now blocks, like I said, are containers for content. If you come to the top one here, you can see, I know it's kind of hard to see, but this little insert arrow. Go ahead and click on that. And you will see content blocks.
These are what they are. Content blocks are, you want to throw a movie on here, you want to put a slideshow, you want to put a map. All different kinds of content. We're going to go and find the right block. The content blocks here are organized by what they're all about. So we have things like, you know, a Spacer. Weird. We have a Map, a Calendar. We have a Button. We have all kinds of added commerce. If you want to have a chart. And you want to add social media. These are all things we can work with. Now, the thing I love about blocks is that they're pretty easy.
They really are. As a matter of fact, if we really want to, let's do this. We're going to put out something kind of simple here. Go ahead and click on Button. And it's going to add a little button block. You're going to see, OK, well here are the properties for the button. We can do things like add a URL and do all this kind of thing. Just go ahead and click SAVE. And it's going to put it out there. This is called the Button Block. Now down here you're going to see that this is our Text Block. If you put your cursor in it, you can start to edit it. The way these blocks work is, you can kind of see here, is that if you move your cursor around it's going to start to show you where each block is.
You can edit some of the blocks by clicking on EDIT. It takes you back to those setting that we just saw. I'm going to cancel this. And you'll also see a little garbage can here, which you can probably figure out what this means. This means Remove. The blocks kind of stack on top of each other. And the idea is, if we want to put an image out here, we put an Image Block. If we want to put some text, we put a Text Block. Later, a little bit later, we're going to talk about how we can arrange these and move them around, to put them side by side and do different stuff like that. The thing I like about these blocks is that we can work with them in several different ways.
I don't want this block, so what we're going to do is just delete it. So go ahead and remove it by clicking on this little trash can. And it's going to say, "Are you sure?" Yes. And there we go, we're back where we were. So, content blocks, super important. They're the foundation that you build your content with in Squarespace. And once you feel comfortable working with them, you'll be about to design your pages pretty easily. Go ahead and click on SAVE. And we've got our content out there and we're back on the page here.
