In this video, learn how to configure the language and region, business information, and social links for your website.
- [Illustrator] Before we start digging into changing out pictures and putting in text and all the rest of this, there's a couple of things that we wanted to get set first, basic global site settings that are going to be used throughout the website. It's always easier to set this stuff up at the beginning, then to do all of the fun work and then have to do all this stuff at the end when it's really easy to forget it. So the things I'd like to set up now are available to us right here in the main navigation if we go to settings. First of all, let's go ahead and start here with language and region. Generally speaking Squarespace is pretty smart determining from the IP address from wherever you're working with it, to determine where you are geographically speaking. And so here, Squarespace is guessing that I am in the United States that I speak English, and in fact, I'm in Massachusetts. All of this is correct, absolutely true stuff. Your results are probably different unless you happen to be in Massachusetts in the United States also. So if this is not correct, feel free to correct it. Maybe you have a client somewhere else in the country. And so you can make any of those changes here. That's what Language and Region is about. The next thing to look at is the Business Information. In your exercise files folder, you will find a text document that has the contact information for Topsy Turvy Cakes Design in that happens to be the following. So it has a phone number of 1-2-3, 4-5-6, 7-8-9-0 It has a contact email of firstname.lastname@example.org. And then it also has a physical location. So this is Topsy Turvy Cakes Design and its address of 6410 via Real. And it's finishes the rest for me here, it's in Carpentaria, California, 93013 and it actually generates a nice little Google Map here for me as well, showing me where it is on the map. Down here, there are business hours. You don't have to include this, for example, if you are a freelancer, say you're a freelance web designer, you may not have a physical location and you may not have business hours, but if you have a store you probably have business hours. In this case, Topsy Turvy Cakes Design is open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. And that is Monday through Friday. So I'm just going to type it once, copy paste a whole bunch of times, and on Saturday and Sunday they're closed. And they have some examples right here showing you how you can enter different dates and times for this. All right, so once you filled in that information, go ahead and say, save and we can back out of that. The last thing I want to configure here in these basic settings are our social links. And that is here under the Social links tab. By default, we are configured with Instagram, with Facebook and with Yelp, which that makes sense for a burger restaurant in Brooklyn might not necessarily make sense for Topsy Turvy Cakes Design might not make sense for your business, but we can change these very easily. Once again, inside of your exercise files folder, you will find inside a folder number three in the site info.textfile. These are links to the various social media accounts for Topsy Turvy Cakes Design. And we start here with Facebook, I'm just going to copy that link. And if you look here at Facebook, just click on it, it will open up this little window. You can change the web address to the correct one, and then choose if you want to show the social icon. So if you were to uncheck this, it would no longer show the F for Facebook up here, or you can choose to show it. Why would you choose not to show it? Well, you might wanted a link to the social media for other various purposes, rather than just these icons here, just depends, there's lots of ways to use social links here in Squarespace. Go ahead and say, save. The next one that I have here on the list is for Instagram. So if we go ahead and copy that. Then here in Instagram, click on it and we can edit that, paste in my link, save. Now, I don't have a Yelp, so I can just hit the remove button here to get rid of that. That's easy enough to do. And then I have instead a Twitter account. We can go ahead and copy that link. And then right here where it says, add social link or email, if you click on that and paste, and then hit the return key on your keyboard, that will go ahead and just generate a Twitter account for you automatically. Finally, I do have an email address as well. That's info@topsyturvycakedesign. And as it says here, these can be social links or emails. So I'm going to go ahead and drop my email address in, and it will use a little envelope to go with that. And as you see, those social links are showing up here in the navigation at the top of the page and in this template, they're also down at the bottom here in the footer. If you don't like the order that they're in, you can easily change that around. Simply drag and drop to put these in whatever order makes sense to you, for whatever reason you like them that way. All right, so with those basic settings, all taken care of, I'm going to go back on out to my main navigation and the next thing I'll look at are fonts.
