- Setting basic site information is probably gonna be one of the first things you do to your Squarespace site. The actual site. The site settings run the gamut of content that appears in the site itself, to settings that just, well, affect your Squarespace account so, let's take a look and set up the most widely-used settings. In your trial account when you log in here, you'll see settings on the left. If you click on that, there are a whole bunch of them in here, we're not gonna hit every single one. But I am gonna draw your attention to a few that I think are kind of important.
Go ahead and click on BASIC INFORMATION, and it will show you some of the things, a couple things actually, that we set when we first created the site, such as site type. You can choose what you want this to be. Business, Ecommerce, Non-Profit, Personal. Now, this is gonna be a design site so we might wanna choose Business for this. There we go. Down here you're gonna see SITE DESCRIPTION. The description of your site is something, it's like a short bio, et cetera. This, if you look right here actually it says "Some templates will use this on the main "presentation of your website." We wanna make sure we do this.
The description can't hurt your site. And if we are concerned with search-engine optimization, we wanna make sure we do this. We can just say, "We are a", and I'm always particular, "a design company", "company located", and you can put you know, where you're located, "in California", obviously you put your state, all this kinda thing. "That specializes in", and you can go in and put in, just we're thinking in terms of key words, specializes in print and web design. So we'll do something like that.
Obviously you wanna make this as robust as you can with as many key words as you can. Just information that you might think that is relevant to your site. We can if we want to, go out and do things like bold or italic. You can also go in and paste text if you want to. Remove formatting, we can even put links in here if we wanna do that. So you can put a link to a website, et cetera. And if this does show up in the template, you might wanna do a little more work to it. And you'll be able to tell that it shows up, because you'll see it over there in the right somewhere in the site.
Some of them have it in the footer, some have it in the header, some have it in the main area, so you gotta look around and see if it shows up. You'll also see down here that you can allow Squarespace promotion. Squarespace has an example section that your site could show up in, and it could get more traffic, so if you really want to allow that you can, it's turned on by default, you can always turn it on and off. And right here you're gonna see BUSINESS INFORMATION. So if you click on that, you can see, okay, you've made some changes, do you wanna save them? Yes, I do, so click save. And it's gonna say, what's your business information? Once again, this is information that can show up actually in the site.
A lot of times it shows up in the footer, or other areas. So we might wanna put a phone number in here, so I'll do 858, 395, 0284, and I'll just put in kind of a fake number here. Contact email, go ahead and put your email. This is the email address for the contact for the site. So I'll put in mine. And we have a physical location once again, so we can say, and this is just another place to put this. This is not tied to us, per se, as the admin. This is tied to this site, okay so that's definitely a little bit different.
Okay and we'll put that again, the information. There we go, it's got a little map, that's great. You've got business hours, we can change those. We don't have business hours, we're not a physical store. So if you don't want, let's say you're a design shop, and you don't want this kind of thing, you don't have to put this kind of information in there. All right, so we can go ahead and save that, and go back to BASIC INFORMATION up in the upper-left corner there, and we're done. So we can save this, once again, I'm not sure why it's asking me to save again, but there we go. Go back to SETTINGS, you'll get used to doing this, where you kind of come into some settings, and then go back out to get to the main, this is how we navigate.
We can set things like LANGUAGE & REGION. Click on LANGUAGE, you can set a time zone. You just click on the map, it's kinda cool. That's where I'm at right now. I'm on the eastern seaboard of the United States. We can change things like LANGUAGE if we wanna do that, we have GEOGRAPHY we can set different locations. You can do this if you really want to. It's already set for me, I've got time zone set, so I'm gonna go back to SETTINGS here. We have what are called DOMAINS as well, if you click on that. Domains, you can if you want to, connect a third-party domain, you can go to GoDaddy, there's a lot of sites where you can get a domain, and you connect it, but what you need to do is you need to make sure that you're actually paying for this, rather than just have it be a trial.
The domain that they give us is just temporary. Okay this is for our trial site to be able to work on. We really wanna get our own domain when we're ready to go. We're not, we're just working on this, so we don't have to worry about this right now. Click back on SETTINGS. You'll see that we also have Email, click on that. You can see right here that you can associate, or actually link Google Apps and Email to be able to work directly with those apps with Squarespace, which is actually kinda cool, it's a little bit newer.
We need to be on a paid plan. So we're not gonna upgrade right now. We're gonna do that late late later in the course. So we're gonna leave that alone. You'll see that we also have permissions which we didn't really take a look at, we looked at security earlier. If you click on PERMISSIONS, you can if you want to, invite other people to have access to this site. This could mean authors who are gonna blog for you, contributors, if you will. There are different levels that we can set up. If you scroll down here you're gonna see that we do have, there's the website owner, that's me.
And we can activate, we can transfer ownership, if we want to, and this happens a lot, where you are maybe hired to design a website, and you do it using Squarespace, and the you wanna hand over the site to the person that paid you, for instance, you can transfer ownership. That's kinda neat, and then they can go in and make changes. If you're curious about contributors and permissions, Go to More help here, there's a little link you can click on to go take a look at that. We're not gonna do this right now. So go back to SETTINGS. You can just see there's a lot in here, there's a ton of stuff, we're not gonna hit all of this.
We're not gonna talk about Blogging, but I do wanna hit Social right now. If you click on Social, we can if we want to, connect accounts to this site. We have Facebook Page, we have Share Buttons we can use. If you click on CONNECTED ACCOUNTS, we can connect different accounts, there's a ton of accounts we can connect here. Matter of fact, if you click on CONNECT ACCOUNT, look at all the different accounts we can connect to. This is awesome, you can get a SmugMug, you can do Dropbox, this is my favorite. You can grab images and content right from Dropbox, and pull it into the site.
Of course we have the typicals, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, et cetera. We can if we want to, if I click on Twitter, this a lot of times is for if you want to associate a business Twitter account, for instance, or a business Facebook. If it's not business, it could be personal, doesn't really matter, but we can do that. So you can authorize this to use it. So I can say Authorize app, and you can see right here, it says Authorize Squarespace 6, which is kind of interesting, 'cause we're actually in Squarespace 7. And there we go, you can see right there, this is because I'm already logged in to Twitter.
Okay, if you're not logged into that particular service, it's gonna ask you to log in usually. So these are the accounts we can connect, go in and connect 'em, do it. This is for, once again, your business accounts, your business social media, so if you're setting this up for somebody else, don't connect your personal accounts. I know that makes sense, I hope. Go back out to Social, and you're gonna see that we do have Share Buttons, if you click on that, which is kinda cool, these are all the different Share Buttons that if you insert a social media block, we'll see that in a little while, these are the different buttons that will show up.
We can turn these on, turn these off, there's different types that you can work with. So this is where we go to do this, okay? Go back, and you can see we also can associate a Facebook Page if you want, we're not gonna do that right now, but you can. It's gonna show up in SOCIAL when we enter that information. Go back over to SETTINGS. Scroll down, okay, we're not gonna do Blogging right now. We looked a little bit at security, let's take a quick look at SEO. SEO can be really important, and this is a must-do. I would do this, okay? You're gonna see right here that we have a description that we need to fill out.
This is not a ton of keywords stuffed in here. This is just a descriptive, pretend that you're trying to give an elevator speech to someone. You're trying to say in maybe one or two sentences, what it is you do, and make it so that it does have some keywords in there. Okay so we can say you know like, Design Company, specializes in, and you don't even have to spell all this right. Spe-ci-a-lizes, wow, in print and web design for, and continue, okay? I'm gonna keep it there, just for sake of brevity here.
You can see right here that we can set up what's called the HOMEPAGE TITLE FORMAT. Right now it's just gonna show the title name, that's talking like in a tab up there, if you take a look. It says DESIGN COMPANY, that's the site name. If we want to, we can add things like, a collection of a page, et cetera. So you can do something like this, if you hover over that little question mark you'll see look, a little % C if you wanna do that, so you could do something like this. I believe we could put like a vertical bar, and then type in % C, and that'll put in the collection title. So it'll say okay, here's your site name, and collection title you'll learn later on is kinda like the page name that you're on.
Although, the collection, we'll look at, don't worry. And you look down here at what's called COLLECTION TITLE, these are the top-level pages, you can call them pages I guess, like a blog, a gallery, an album, and this is what's gonna show up, once again if you go out to the question mark, you can delete any of the ones you don't wanna show up, and you can add a couple, you've got two choices down here. Now the ITEM TITLE FORMAT we're gonna leave alone, okay for right now, 'cause we don't need that. Go ahead and click save, and go back to SETTINGS. And if you look down here, Security we talked about, that's adding a password to your site, we looked at that a few videos back.
Down here you're gonna see Billing & Account. If you wanna update from free to paid, or switch from, you know they have different tiers of billing, you can do it there, and then you'll see Advanced right here, if you click on Advanced, these are just different things that are actually kinda cool. If you wanna do things like set a Default Text Editor to edit things, you can do that. There's a 404 Error page here, or Page Not Found. You can go in and customize that if you want to. We can also do things like inject code, or different mappings, different things like that.
Some of this is a little more advanced, and we're not gonna touch it right now. But for future reference, know that some of this is here. But go back over to SETTINGS, that's pretty much it. We can go back to HOME, and we've got ourselves our content. Now like I said, when you first start working with Squarespace, you really need to look at those settings that we changed. As you become more familiar with Squarespace, and as you expand the content possibilities in your site, The more settings you'll touch.
