The classic low-pass filter (LP VCF)

The classic low-pass filter (LP VCF)

(electronic hum) - [Instructor] In the previous two movies, we learned how to tune our oscillators, and how to select waveforms based on their harmonic spectra. In this movie, we're going to talk about removing some of those harmonics, using the most common filter in synthesis, the low-pass filter. Now filters are defined by how strongly they remove harmonics. The basic low-pass filter in the Arturia Modular V is what's called a 4-pole, or 24db per octave filter. That means as you get one octave above its cutoff frequency, harmonics are reduced by 24 decibels in volume. Let's go ahead and start with another sample patch, such as one oscillator one filter. In this case, our oscillator is being routed through our mixer, to our low-pass filter, and then to our VCA. (electronic sounds) I'm going to change the keyboard tracking setting on this filter initially to Off. Therefore, it's getting no external control. I'm only controlling it by the knobs here, such as frequency and resonance. So…
