Sample and hold (S-H)

(synthesized music) - [Instructor] Next, we're going to put noise to work as a control voltage source. And to do that, we're going to use a module known as a sample and hold. What a sample and hold does is look at an input voltage. Can be a random signal like noise, it can be an orderly signal, like an alpha wave form. And then periodically samples it, and holds that particular voltage output. You can use that output then to modulate something else inside your synthesizer patch. Let's demonstrate that at work. Again I'm going to use a template, in this case I'm going to use two oscillators poly. (synthesizer playing) And I'm going to fatten that up a little bit by dropping one of the oscillators down an octave. (synthesizer playing) Sample and hold can occupy one of the slots currently used for an envelope.
