Attack/decay/sustain/release (ADSR) envelopes
(upbeat music) - [Instructor] Before we go any further exploring filters, and there is a lot more to explore with them, I'd like to move on briefly to envelope generators. These allow you to articulate the timbre of each note by changing the cutoff frequency during the life of that note. I'm going to go back to my templates and choose that one oscillator, one filter patch again. Again, we have a sawtooth wave going into the filter going into our amplifier, and that amplifier has its own envelope. (keyboard notes) Right now, it has a very sharp attack, it sustains at maximum level, so the decay doesn't really come into play, and a very fast release. (keyboard note) You can see how the waveform grows and falls back to silence during the life of a note. I'll set a slower attack, (keyboard note) reduce the sustain level, compensate by increasing the output level, hold my VCA, and now you'll see slow attack decay back to sustain level.
