"In Walked Bud" by Thelonius Monk

- Great job on learning all of those jazz beats. Now, let's move into some jazz fills, and we're gonna play some of the fills that were actually used in the beats that we just learned, so let's get started on some jazz fills. The first jazz fill that we're gonna learn is something that Art Blakey played on a song called In Walked Bud, and it's a typical fill that can be used in a lot of different places, but here's how Art played it in this song. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drum beat) That fill is pretty universal, you can apply it just about any jazz beat at just about any tempo, so let's just make something up as we go, and play four measures, and we'll connect them with that drum fill, and you can play anything you'd like, just make it jazzy, so I'll just pick something out of thin air and play it, here we go. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drum beat) This next fill is one that Jeff Hamilton plays in I've Got You Under My Skin, again another universal fill and it goes like this. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drum beat) So, let's take that basic fill and put it in context of a beat that we're gonna play, any beat that you want, just make it jazzy, and we'll play four bars a time, and then we'll connect it with that drum fill, and play another four bars a time, so it's gonna sound like this. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drum beat)
