Syncopation with the bass drum

- Earlier we learned some syncopation with using our hands and playing syncopated beats with the snare drum. And now we're going to do that with the bass drum a little bit. And this next song is called, "So What," and this is the drum beat that Jimmy Cobb plays on the song. He uses a wire brush with this right hand on the ride cymbal and he's clicking the high hat on beats two and four and he's going to hit the bass drum kind of along with the horns and everything. So here it goes. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drumming) Now a couple things to note in this tune. One is, if you're not getting a nice, crisp chick on your high hat, your cymbals might be flat and parallel. If they're exactly flat and parallel, you might get a suction thing going where the cymbals stick together when you chick them with your foot. So there's a little mechanism on the bottom cymbal on your high hat stand. It's a little thumb screw. Just tighten that and that'll tilt the bottom cymbal just a bit and you…
