- The next jazz beat we're going to learn is something that Philly Joe Jones played on a Miles Davis recording of "Straight, No Chaser." And it goes like this. One, two, one, two, three. (drumming) That's a classic, classic jazz pattern that we're going to play a lot. The next beat we're going to learn is something that Sonny Greer played on a recording of "In a Mellow Tone," and it incorporates the open high hat. So we're going to open the high hat on beats one and three and we're going to close it on beats two and four and it's going to sound like this. One, two, one, two, three. (drumming) The next beat that we're going to learn is something that Ray McKinley played on a song called, "In the Mood." And it builds on the last beat that we just learned where the open high hat is on two and four and we close it on beats one and three but this time we're going to feather the bass drum nice and lightly on all four down beats. So it's going to sound like this. One, two, one, two, three…
