- [Voiceover] Some drummers read music and some don't. You don't need to read music in order to play the drums, but it can really accelerate your learning and help you become a great drummer. Learning to read music is similar to learning a language. In music notation, symbols, called notes, rests, and dynamics indicate sounds, silence, and punctuation respectively. These music notation elements can be arranged in all sorts of ways, much like letters of the alphabet are arranged to make words, and how words are arranged to make sentences. Here's how it works. Whole note, half note, quarter note, eighth note, sixteenth note. Each type of note represents a different length of time a sound is to be made. A whole note is a long sound. A half note is a sound that lasts half the time of a whole note. A quarter note lasts half as long as a half note. An eighth note lasts half the time of a quarter note, and a sixteenth note lasts, you guessed it, half the length of an eight note. Here's how…
