- This next tune, Pride and Joy, uses a ghost note, and ghost notes are just real quiet notes. They're so quiet they're like barely even there. They're like ghosts. All right, so this is how a ghost note sounds incorporated into a shuffle beat. (drum beat) Chris Layton incorporates ghost notes into this next beat in a beautiful way, and listen to how this beat sounds. The ghost notes are supposed to be a lot quieter than the accenting notes. So let's listen carefully to how this is played. (drum beat) Now the best way to get comfortable with playing ghost notes within a beat is to play quarter-notes first, so we're gonna play quarters on the ride, we're gonna play quarters on the snare, and we're gonna play all four quarters on the bass drum, but on the snare quarters we're gonna play beats one and three ghosted and we're gonna play beats two and four loud.
