One drop

One drop

- The next thing we're gonna learn is how to play reggae beats. Reggae is a great style of music. I can't wait to start playing it, so let's go. The first reggae beat we'll learn is the one-drop. The one-drop rhythm can be heard in most roots reggae music. It got it's name from the intentional omission of beat one on the kick drum. In most case, the kick drum is played on beat three instead. Let's continue to the next lesson now so we can hear what the one-drop rhythm sounds like. The one-drop beat appears in a lot of reggae tunes, including this one called 54-56 That's My Number by Toots and the Maytals, like this. - [Voiceover] One, two, one two, three, four. (slow, cymbal-heavy drumming) - This is the beat from Buffalo soldier that Carlton Barrett played with Bob Marley. Goes like this. - [Voiceover] One, two, one, two, three, four. (slow drumming)
