- The next beat we're gonna learn incorporates ghost notes into it, and this is played by Art Blakey on a song called Moanin, and it sounds like this. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drum beat) So, let's break down what's happening in that beat. Let's just start off by playing a simple jazz beat with all four on the floor, feathered of course, 'cause this is jazz, and we're gonna close the high hat on beats two and four, and it's gonna sound like this. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drum beat) Now, we're gonna take that same beat, and we're gonna add a little ghost note right before we beat four, so on the end of beat three there's gonna be a ghost note, it's gonna sound like this. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drum beat) Now, let's apply that same concept, but we're gonna add another ghost note right before we hit beat two on the snare, we're gonna add the ghost note to the end of beat one, and it's gonna sound like this.
