"Free Fallin'" by Tom Petty

- The next beat we're gonna learn is from a song called Free Fallin' and, it's a Tom Petty song, probably one of his most songs. And, the beats that we've been playing recently, the last few we've played, have had the bass drum on beat one, and the and-a beat three. So, now, we're gonna move that bass drum hit that comes on the and-a beat three, we're gonna move that over to the and-a beat two. So, the song sounds like this. Free Fallin'. One, two, one, two, three, four. (drumming) Dotted notes. If you're following along with your book, you'll see that the notation for the beat Free Fallin' can be written using something we call dotted notes. When a dot is added to a note, the duration of that note is extended by half of its value. For example, a quarter note without a dot tells you to play for one full beat. A dotted quarter note tells you to extend that by half its value. Half the value of a quarter note is an eighth note, which can also be thought of as half of one beat. So, the…
