From the course: Drum Set Lessons: On the Beaten Path

Drum fill from "Come As You Are"

- Great job, we've learned a bunch of rock beats and we're ready to move on to the next section which is basic rock fills. And now, drum fills are very fun because you get to play all the drums and they're used in a lot of cool ways. So drum fills can be used to start a song. Drum fills can be used to connect two sections of a song like a chorus and a verse. Or, drum fills could be used to end a song, or they could just be used to fill space. So, it's a lot of fun to play and we're gonna look at actual drum fills played in the songs that we just learned the beats for. So let's get started and learn some drum fills. Earlier, we learned how to play the drum beat for "Come As You Are" and now we're gonna learn how to play the drum fill that Dave Grohl uses to launch into that beat in the beginning of the song. And it starts off on the high rack tom, ends with the floor tom and the beat kind of concludes with a crash and a kick drum hit. So, the first rack tom comes in on the and of beat three and the whole beat sounds like this. One, two, one, two, three. (drums and cymbal crash) Okay, now let's play that exact drum fill that we just learned in the context of the song. So we're gonna start off with the drum fill and then we're gonna go into the drum beat that Dave plays on this song. So, that would go like this. One, two. One, two, three. (drums and cymbals crash)
