"Chameleon" by Herbie Hancock

- This next beat is from a famous Herbie Hancock song called Chameleon, and the drummer, Harvey Mason, lays down a really funky, really syncopated beat that goes like this. (plays hi-hat intro) One, two, one, two, three, four (plays funky, syndicated beat from "Chameleon") Now the first thing you'll notice is that there's a snare hit on the uh of beat one, and not a snare hit on beat two. So let's just get comfortable adding in that snare hit, like this. (plays hi-hat) One, two, one, two, three, four (plays syncopated beat) Now let's build on this rhythm, and add in an extra bass drum hit, like this. (plays hi-hat) One, two, one, two, three, four (plays syncopated beat with extra bass drum) So now, we're gonna take the beat that we just played, but we're gonna add a little drag to the end of beat four. So on the uh of beat four, just bounce your stick a little bit so it kinda blends right into beat one. And this is what I'm talking about. (plays hi-hat) One, two, one, two, three, four…
