The 5-stroke roll

- This next tune, Chelsea Bridge, uses a 5-Stroke Roll, and it's exactly like it sounds. We're gonna hit the drum five times but it happens real fast. So the way that the sticking goes is 1e and, and we're gonna bounce the first notes and just hit a solid last note. So it goes like this, 5-Stroke Roll. (drumming rapidly) Buddy Rich, quite possibly the greatest drummer that's ever lived, played this fill on a song called Chelsea Bridge, and there's a lot going on here but listen to how it sounds. One. (cymbals clanging) Two. One, two, three, four. (drumming) (cymbals clanging) So let's start by just isolating and repeating that first measure and looping that over and over again. Here we go. One. (cymbals clanging) Two. One, two, three, four. (drumming) Now let's just focus on the second measure and let's isolate and repeat that. One. (cymbals clanging) Two. One, two, three, four.
