Explore the services from Bluemix, the PaaS offering from IBM Cloud.
- [Instructor] Hi there, I'm (mumbles) welcome to this learning series, IBM Cloud, Bluemix Startup. If you are someone who simply wants to explore and experiment with IBM Cloud, or you could be a web, Android or IT developer, seeking opportunities in cloud computing with Bluemix, or for any other reason. This course is made just for you. We will start from the beginning, and explore all the services, options and levels on Bluemix and then deploy our test application (mumbles) So, let's start.
So what are the benefits of cloud computing, and what is cloud computing? We know we simple cannot maintain the hardware requirement for our project, for our organization. Then we move to cloud. Because, on cloud computing, we easily get upgraded. Lower cost of ownership, it is always up. No need to check internet connection, if we have to own our server at our office or home.
It has disaster assistance, because we can choose from various locations and it has various backups, in case of calamities and other things. Productivity can be from anywhere, offsite data storage and no IT maintenance cost. If we have to maintain the entire dataset in our organization, at our office or home. There would be unrequired, unexpected cost of maintenance.
Hardware maintenance, and even software maintenance. So we simply shift to cloud computing, because cloud is beneficial. One of the most important things is scalability. As, for example, if our organization currently needs 20 GB's storage of (mumbles) and in future, in coming five to ten years, our data is supposed to exceed to up to 20 terabytes.
We cannot plan our proper strategy right now, if we don't know the future, if we could not predict the future. But in cloud, we don't need to predict the future, we need to simply relax and focus on our development work. So what is IBM Cloud? IBM Cloud is a set of cloud computing services for business purpose. IBM Cloud include Infrastructure as a Service, Software as a Service and Platform as a Service.
Offered through public, private and hybrid cloud. So these are infrastructure as a service, platform as a service and software as a service. On Premises, these are the four categories, the first one, On Premises is the category in which if we have to physically maintain the server, all the datasets in our organization, office or home, we need to manage the blue color portion, we need to manage everything from applications, data, runtime, middleware, O/S, virtualization, storage and networking.
All that stuff we need to manage ourselves, we need to have someone and the cost is very high and even productivity is not so good. But with cloud computing we get three options, IS, PS and SAS. Software as a Service, Platform as a Service, Infrastructure as a Service. As you can see, the blue color portion is managed by us, and the orange color portion is managed by the cloud host staff organization.
So, with Infrastructure as a Service, we need to only manage applications till O/S, but with Platform as a Service, we need to only manage applications and data. But with Software as a Service we need nothing to manage. Just, we need to use that thing. So what is the application area of these three major categories, lets see this. The example of Software as a Service is simply email.
As we all use email like Gmail, or Yahoo mail or Yandex, we don't bother to manage the software. It is managed by the organization that is hosting that thing, providing the service. In Platform as a Service, an example is typically application development, decision support, any web development, IT development, which is provided with Bluemix. We have to build our application and host on it.
With Infrastructure as a Service, we need physical hardware, if you simply to migrate to it. So what is Bluemix? Bluemix is a Platform as a Service, it is a part of IBM Cloud. Cloud Foundary there's something, an open-source augmentation, the Cloud Foundary, which is governing all the services provided by communities, IBM and other third party things.
Allow administrators to create a marketplace of services, it was originally developed by VMWare, and now managed by three major giants. So it is a very important thing. What are the alternatives to IBM Cloud? There are three major alternatives to IBM Cloud, The AWS, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud Platform. We can migrate to any of these categories, or everything has roughly the same concept and the same services offering.
But, the IBM Cloud is preferred more, over to some extent. But although, it is a fact that AWS is most widely used, these days and Google Cloud Platform is also coming up. IBM Cloud was introduced in later period, after these all. So it is best because it contains Watson, the AS support and other things we will explore later.
So here are two simple services, and difference between them offered by IBM. The Softlayer is Infrastructure as a Service, and Bluemix is Platform as a Service. In Bluemix we need to only manage applications and data, but with Softlayer, applications to O/S, everything is managed by us. Based on requirement, we can choose anything, either O/S software or Bluemix.
So, how is it stored and where is it stored? So IBM, roughly, divides into three categories. It is stores its workload on various parts, IBM Object is Standard, is the category where all the frequent data access goes. The data which is less frequently used goes to World, and the data which is roughly never used, goes to Cold Vault.
So it is automatically done by the IBM Cloud. IBM Cloud is sometimes also referred to as the SmartCloud, for the various reasons, like it has management support and development. Security and isolation, availability and performance, technology platform, advance payment and billing system. It follows the reference model and also, for the reason because it can say stuff, AI support. The Watson.
