- Every book needs a cover, let's talk about cover design. I want to start with some intro thoughts here, first off, at least 95 percent of authors should hire out for cover design. You'd be surprised how many people try it themselves, and a lot of terrible covers get slapped on books, think about how much work went into the book. Hire out, pro designers simply do it better. This is what they do for a living, and you can find some really affordable designers, we're going to discuss that. It is a rare breed, an author who can also be a cover designer, but they do exist they are out there, and I've even tried my hand at it, because I try a little bit of everything in this business. Now, as embarrassing as this is, I need to share some covers that I've designed in the past, because I was either too cheap or too stupid to make my own.
