While Skype numbers allow people to call you, Skype-to-Go is a number that you set up to make it easier for you to call other people even if they aren't on Skype. Skype-to-Go is a very handy feature but it can be kind of confusing here are a couple of scenarios that illustrate how to use it. Say you live in Chicago and you have a friend in Australia, you can set up a Skype-to-Go number and link it to his mobile phone. Skype will give you a local Chicago number when you call it your call will be forwarded to your friends mobile phone and you can talk with them at Skype's low per minute rates plus any costs you have for the local call with your carrier.
Another way to use Skype-to-Go is to call a friend on their Skype account from your mobile or land line. Again you'd set up a Skype-to-Go number and when you call it from your mobile. Your friend will pick it up in Skype wherever they are in the world. So in a nutshell, Skype-to-Go let's you take advantage of low Skype calling rates for calls between mobiles or land line phones and even Skype if you so desire. You don't need to use Skype software at all to make the calls you simply call the Skype-to-Go number on your regular phone, and your patch through to your contact and you pay low per minute rates.
Here's how to set up a Skype-to-Go number. Log into your account on skype.com. Now, I do want to mention that Skype does update their interface pretty often so your screen and the exact steps of this process may differ from mine. You'll want to scroll down to manage features and click on Skype-to-Go. Then click give it a try. And there walking through explaining what it is you can say Next and now you want to add a contact here. Type in the name of the person you want to call and then choose if you want to call them on their phone or on their Skype account.
If you choose phone you'll specify the country they're in and their phone number. And when you call, you'll be charged at the permanent rate for their country as you were calling that number from Skype. In this case I want to call Shea's Skype account so I'll type in her name, and click Skype Name ideally it would pull this from my contacts and she already is in my contacts but its not set up to do that right now. So I'll manually type in her Skype name and click Next. And now since I haven't registered my cell phone yet, it's asking me to do that so I want to give it my information I'm in the United States, New York City and enter your number and then indicate that it is a mobile line.
So next, it wants to send an SMS for every update and new contact that's fine. And now I need to create a code in case that I call from a phone other then this one so they'll know its me so I'll enter a pin code there and now I can say Next. And that's registering my phone to the Skype-to-Go number. So now I'm all set. I can call Shay's Skype account right from my cell phone, by dialing this number. Using Skype to go numbers, you can now call friends, family and coworkers around the world from a land line or mobile.
Just remember though, there may be fees involved, depending on where you're calling, and where you're calling from. So always consult skype.com for the current rates.
