- [Instructor] Oftentimes one of the easiest ways to add a convincing look to the surfaces that we are creating is to apply a photograph of the real thing to the diffuse slot of a material which is just one of the uses that our map type for this exercise can be put to, this being the bitmap node. In this version of our scene then we have just a basic generic material applied to our shelf geometry which as you can see from the render in the history list gives a straightforward gray appearance. As we want these to look like real pieces of wood, we clearly need to do some work and make good use of the bitmap node. Now again, whilst the work we do here will be applied to the diffuse color channel of our material, everything we look at on the bitmap could just as easily apply to using it in other map slots, not just on a material either. We could also for instance use a bitmap to control the color of lights in our scene or to add a custom background image to our environment. In fact…
