Using real images instead of graphic representations in SketchUp offers a more realistic idea of what your decor will look like when finished. For instance, you can navigate to the website of a carpeting business to download a specific carpet image. This online video provides more information on selecting an image to use as a material.
When you are working on a project, you will want, at some point in time, to start picking out the materials for your project. Instead of cluttering up your model, you may want to use another SketchUp file to work on. The one that you're looking at here is what I call the materials bench. It's kind of nice because, first of all, you get a figure in here, her name is Susie. And you have a floor, you have a wall, and then you have a component. All these objects can have different materials applied to them, and then you can approximate whether they look good enough for the project that you want to use in.
So, basically Susie's there for scale. And as you apply materials to the various surfaces, you should get a sense as far as whether it looks good or not, and then if not, you can modify it. So, that's how we use the material bench. Next, what we're going to look at is creating a carpet. We're going to go to Shaw Contract Group, the website there, and look up a specific carpet that we can work with. In the browser, make sure that you type in www.shawcontractgroup.com/productspec/sho- w/60749.
And what that should do is bring you right into their trellis group. Now, they have a number of colors that are available, of which 50220 is a nice color to go ahead use. Now, we're going to make sure that, that is selected here, should we have a little red area around it. And then over here, where it says swatch view, click on that. Now, you'll see a swatch of it. We're going to have to go down. Down at the bottom, you'll see where it says, DOWNLOAD HI-RES.
Click on that, and what that should do is provide you with the download right there. You can right-click and show it in the folder, and save it as you see here, which is 60749_50220_Main. And then once you have it, you can copy it over to your other file, which we're going to pick up this one, and we're going to go to the Desktop, and to our Exercise Files, and we're going to bring it into our materials folder, and you'll here that there's already a copy that's been placed.
So, if you don't get that, at least you've got a copy of it here. So, what we're going to do now is just kind of close out this website, and we're going to use Shaw's carpet for a customized material
