When to go guerrilla

(delightful music) - Guerrilla research was designed to gather info even when there's no dedicated time or any real resources. It's really just the same as any other UX research done in a condensed way; it's kind of like espresso. Going guerrilla is ideal for situations when you've already done some core research and know your target users and their problems. Like, let's say you're working on a breakfast delivery app and you know that your users are super into their coffee. It's easiest to effectively condense the research methods that are meant to evaluate potential solutions, like usability tests. One of the most common ways to guerrillaize research is to abandon traditional recruiting and screening and find participants out in public. Hey, can I ask you about your coffee preferences? - [Respondent] Sure. - See, that was a super fast way to get a participant but it works best when you have a really wide user base or can go to a place with lots of your target users. For instance, if you want to talk to caffeine lovers, a coffee shop at 9:00 a.m. is perfect. If you want to talk to vegans, a steak house, probably not your best place to hang out. Guerrilla recruiting is also best when you're researching a topic that people feel pretty comfortable talking about. - Well, I have my first cup of coffee before I even leave the house. It's got to be Columbian, it's got to be unground and it's got to be weighed. After I weigh it out, I grind it up, get it into my canmax, pour in some hot water, specifically at 130 degrees because, I'm not wasting anybody's time including my own; I got stuff to do, that's why I'm getting caffeinated. - If your only options are to do guerrilla research or no research at all, I'd always choose guerrilla. Even if you have limited time or resources, you can always find a way to sneak in at least a little bit of research and always, more caffeine. (delightful music)
