- Animation is often a delightful element in design, but it also serves utilitarian purposes. The first purpose is to provide feedback to the user. Feedback is important in user experience, because our users always need to be aware of what the system is doing. Every action the user takes, the system responds. When the system doesn't respond, this can be a frustrating and confusing situation. Animation is often used to give users feedback that the system is processing while they wait. The most common feedback animation patterns are progress and loading elements. Progress bars and spinners communicate that the system is working in the background. Typically, the animation runs until the system is ready. You might also see a loading pattern where elements load onto the screen in a wireframe style format to indicate that the content is still loading.
