Drum set notation theory

- [Instructor] In order to be proficient with drum set notation, you must already have a good handle on note input, intervals, multiple voices, articulations, hiding rests, notehead types, and staff types for drum mapping purposes. You also need to study drum set notation a bit so that you can understand it. Unfortunately, drum set notation is not as standardized as we'd like it to be and there are several different schools of thought out there regarding how drum notation should look. Most of the difference of opinion occurs in what notes appear in voice two with stems down versus what notes should appear in voice one with stems up. There are also differences of opinion about what line or space the kick drum should go on and more. Many of these differences of opinion are regional. There's definitely an East Coast method and a West Coast method in the United States, for example, some of which you're seeing on the screen…
