- Having everything in the frame be in full focus is fine for your Dad's video at the school play, but if we want to get cinematic with our video storytelling, we need to selectively choose, what things in our frame we put in focus and when. When we compose a shot with shallow depth of field, so that just one subject or object is in focus, and everything else in the background or foreground is out of focus, it looks more artistic and more in line with what the audiences are used to seeing with professional studio productions.
