- If you're working on a tight budget or just need to come up with something to break up the background on the fly, you can always make your own cuculoris. So let's take a look at a few different methods. If you have a sizable piece of foam core or cardboard like I have right here, you can take a razor knife and draw, then cut out abstract patterns, windows frames, blinds or whatever else you can imagine in just a few minutes flat. You can attach your cardboard to a global arm or whatever else you can MacGyver, and just set your light to shine through it. And of course, you want to make sure you leave ample distance between your very flammable cardboard and any hot lights on set. Now similarly, you can also use a piece of black wrap with a razor knife and cut a pattern in it. And this is extra heavy duty aluminum foil that's heat resistant, and because it's heat resistant, you can also attach this directly to barn doors.
