Instructing interview subjects
In general, I always recommend that you keep your technical and stage instructions to regular people to a bare minimum. Anyone who is not a professional performer or otherwise used to being on camera is likely to be a little nervous and can easily become overwhelmed by too many instructions to stand here, look there, and make sure they're in the light, et cetera. So whenever possible, try to make the necessary adjustments on your side of the camera to accommodate them. So we don't want to tell them too many things, but there are still a few key things we need to tell our subjects before we begin to shoot. Remind your subject of the focus of your interview and tell them approximately how long the interview is going to be. Be considerate of any time constraints they give you. Be forthright and honest about your approach and what's expected of the subject in terms of answers and candidates.
