Improving the sound quality on the iPhone 6 with iOgrapher

- What I have here, is a case from iOgrapher, and there's a couple other brands out there. - I wish I had thought of this idea a long time ago, I woulda retired in Hawaii by now. - It's kind of cool, this is the iPhone 5 version, by iPhone 6 one is on order, I'm looking forward to it. But it gives me handles, and we can move, and we've actually covered this unit, once before, but we looked at it for iPads, and we didn't talk about it for phones. It's amazing. - So the cool thing about this is that it's literally just molded, sort of cut out plastic here, right, but if provides you several options. Here on the back, this is where you can just snap in your iPhone, you'll notice that there's actual port right here for the lens. Here's the cool part, Rich, on the front, where you have sort of your hole for your lens, you'll notice there's some (mumbles) here, yeah, so you can actually go out in the web and get some cheap C-mount lenses to give you wide angles, and fish eyes, and even telephotos, which is kind of cool. - Yeah, and what I would suggest from past experience, is consider getting a velcro strap. So just putting an extra strap around here as you're running and gunning, and maybe bending this, you don't want the phone to pop out, this is the case with all of them. - Now, Rich, I love these cold shoes up here you actually have this little road mic that just has an eight inch jack on the end, you can plug into your iPhone. - People used to buy these for DLSRs, this one's actually optimized for phones. It'll work on a DLSR, but it's a smaller, lighter one that's designed specifically to be great for phones and micro (mumbles) cameras. - Now you said something that's interesting there later, now I wouldn't put anything too heavy duty a audio recorder, or a big light, but something like this little portable battery powered light, guess what? That will work perfect up there, and you can also buy cold shoe adapters that will give you wide, so you can have multiple things on the adapter at once. - Yeah, we just slip that in there, and that gives us an extra light. We can reach in there and turn that on for just a second. Now, you're not gonna light up the night with this, but for photo journalism, for video journalism, trade shows, working in small places, we got better audio, we got a little more light, that goes a long way. - I actually was amazed this year at NEB, and I actually went over to IBC, how many press folks were using these because -- - Absolutely. - It's a nice handheld rig, not complicated to run, you already know how to use this, right? You just plug in there, and it's gonna give you some pretty good results, stability. - With internet uploading ability and thanks to new apps like Premiere Pro Clip which allows you to edit on the phone, and when you're done, I don't know if you knew this, Rob, it makes a Premiere Pro project, so you can start on the phone, upload your footage in project file, and a Premiere Pro editor can take over. I mean, what a great hand off. And on the bottom, tripod mount. - Yep. Works perfectly. - So you can put that on here, so you get the best of all those. - Maybe if you're in a mobile situation where you're doing reporting or something like that. - Yeah, and, on improving the audio side, besides getting cases that are adapted, we're seeing all sorts of microphones that are popping up specifically. This looks like a pro grade mic, it's got everything you need. - It goes on that one? - Yeah, but it goes out specifically to a plug, and you want to be careful when you get these plugs, so this end goes into the phone, Rob, why don't you plug that into your phone, but there's one more point there, so let's say we were out somewhere and I was talking to the mic and recording. - You mean I can't just listen like I'm talking on the phone? - Yeah it's kind of hard, 'cause you gotta point the camera. - Yeah, so this end is going to allow you to sort of, as you can see, it's kind of a Y there, this is going to let you tap in a pair of headphones so you can listen to what you're recording as well. - And you can buy those adapters on their own that allow you to take the phone jack and split it to a mic input and a headphone output, so you can get the best of both worlds out of that. All right, I gotta say, Rob, if you asked me a couple years ago, "Oh would you ever use a phone for a project?" I'd say, "Are you crazy?", but these have gotten so good. - Yeah, I know, and I barely kinda got into this. I used to think all those people running around cities, traveling, being touristy with all this gear were kind of, I don't know, kind of geeky, and then I started traveling places and I'm going, "Wow, I really don't want to bring my big camera "and all the other accessories." and then I realized, oh wow, I have a great camera in here, and actually, Rich, I just ordered, we don't have it quite yet, I actually ordered a motorized Gimbal for my iPhone, and it allows me to sort of hand-hold almost like a steady cam. - Every time I think I'm King Geek, he out-geeks me. - Yeah, so, we'll cover that probably in a future episode, at least show you some pictures of it, because it's really, really cool, and it gets you super stable video, but I agree with you Rich, the ecosystem for smartphone accessories for getting great video, getting great photo is constantly expanding, just do a little research out there, do a little window shopping online, and I'm sure you'll find something that works for you. - For Video Gear Weekly, my name's Rich Harrington. - And I'm Robbie Carman. Thanks for watching.
