Identifying common interview problems

Sooner or later, you'll encounter any number of common interview hazards. Never be afraid to momentarily stop the interview and address any serious technical problems. That great story they are telling or that emotional moment you have carefully led them to could be completely unusable if all we hear is a loud mic brushing against the scarf or all we see is a blinding reflection of the lights in their glasses. It's much better to interrupt the flow and get it right than to capture something that's unusable. Make sure you communicate to your sound and camera person that they should notify you if any technical issue occurs that might make a shot unusable, even if it means interrupting the interview. This is particularly important if you don't have a monitor or aren't wearing headphones yourself. These issues will usually reveal themselves in the first few minutes of shooting, so the impact of an interruption will often be minimal. It may be frustrating to be interrupted when you are on…
