Getting neutral shots and cutaways
- So, we know that shooting for the cut is the secret to effective single camera coverage, but one of the big keys to shooting for the cut is getting enough neutral shots and cutaways that can also be inserted almost anywhere to cover up repositioning the camera, missed moments, and other inevitable holes in your coverage of live events. So, during the time before and after we shoot our target song, we're going to shoot the same musical act or performer on stage during the other songs with the goal of trying to get as many neutral shots as possible that we can later use to fix edit problems and give us even more cool shots to choose from when we get to post production. So, what are some examples of neutral shots for something like a musical performance? Basically, any shot that does not pinpoint a specific note, lyric, or moment in the performance. People bobbing their heads to the music, the decor, the venue, candles, signage, food and drinks, over the shoulder audience reaction…
