- In order to build out this environment, along with the Windows 8.1 machine that has the ability to enable the Hyper-V role, you're going to need to gather some software installation media. I go through, in the course, a way to organize that to hopefully find it easier to find from within your Hyper-V machines, but the software that you're going to need is, you're going to need Server 2012. This is going to be the operating system that we're going to install on both the domain controller and also on the SharePoint SQL virtual machine. These will generally be in the form of ISOs. That's probably the easiest way to use this and we'll be mounting that from within the Hyper-V console and we'll show how to do that inside the machine using the menu. Now you may be tempted to use Server 2012 R2.
