- When designing a SharePoint Taxonomy, there are many factors that will influence the design. You have to consider how to partition both documents and data while still controlling access to them and applying any required retention and audit policies. You also want to ensure that users understand the taxonomy and can easily navigate between sites and libraries to find what they need. Firstly, partitioning content requires understanding they key containers of content and what value they provide. It's all about keeping related content together, typically by function or purpose. Focus on dividing content into discrete site collections. They are not only a boundary for content but also storage, security, and policy boundaries which all may influence your design further.
