The objectives for the SharePoint 2013 Microsoft Office Specialist exam 77-419 cover site owner and site administrator topics including creating new subsites. In this video we’ll explore those objectives and also cover permission inheritance; creating subsites using Sites and Workspaces; and create a site using a publishing site template.
- [Voiceover] Let's take a look at expanding the reach of our site collection by adding some subsites for special projects. We'll also add a publishing subsite to help with our internal company communications. So we'll create a subsite using the project site template as well as viewing security and navigation inheritance when we create subsites. And we'll wrap it up by creating another new subsite. This time using the publishing template.
I'm back in my Landon Hotel and this site if you remember, is a team site. We're working on a brand new project and instead of adding additional information to this already full team site, we decide we'd like to create a special subsite, just for that project. I'm gonna scroll to the bottom of my screen so I can see my site contents in the quick launch on the left and I'll choose site contents, scroll down to the bottom underneath the list of all of the apps that I've added.
And I'll click on new subsite to create a new subsite. I'm gonna call it the name of my project, which is project A-B-C. (typing sound) I could add a description if I wish to but I definitely do need to make sure I add the ending part of the web address or the U-R-L. (typing sound) And P-R-J A-B-C will be just fine for that.
As I scroll down, I have a choice of two template types. I have a collaboration tab that gives me team site, blog project site and community site or I have enterprise. I need a collaboration site but instead of using the out of the box team site, I'd like to take a look at the project site. So I'll select project site as the template for my new subsite. And if I scroll down, I have some very important decisions to make.
Normally when you create a subsite, that subsite will have the same permissions as it's parent. So if you leave the use same permissions as parent, you are inheriting that parent permission groups. You can, if you wish to, use unique permissions but you'll need to set them up. For this site, we'll use the same permissions as the Landon Hotel team site. We also get to select whether we wish to display this subsite on the quick launch bar of the parent.
I have enough going on in my quick launch, so I'll leave that to no, but I'd like to create an easy way for me to navigate from my parent site, the Landon Hotel site, to my project A-B-C subsite. So I'll leave display this site on the top link bar of the parent site, set to yes. And, I'd also like to make sure that any changes that I make to the parent top link bar, I also inherit. So I'll select yes for that option and click create to create the new subsite.
Once the site has been created, at the top I have the ability to navigate quickly and easily between my Landon Hotel parent site and my project A-B-C site. On the project A-B-C site, I also have a web part that's been added for the project summary information. And, on the left hand side, I have the quick launch bar that is specific to this site. When this site was created, I had a documents library, a task list as well as a calendar already created for me.
I've also created a site that is a publishing site and I'd like to add a subsite to that publishing site to contain information about our company news. I'll navigate to my Landon publishing site that I've bookmarked earlier. And in this case, we're going to go create the subsite in a slightly different way. If we go back to our settings gear and we choose site settings, on the left under the choice called site administration, I have a choice of sites and work spaces.
I'll select sites and work spaces to navigate to that page. Document workspaces are no longer available in SharePoint 2013, but you can use this page to create a new subsite. As this is one of the exam objectives, you wanna make sure you are comfortable creating subsites in both methods. To create my subsite, I'll simply choose create, and I'll step through this page.
I'm gonna call this subsite Company News (typing sound) and I'll add my U-R-L of C-O news. Because I'm in a publishing site, I have an additional tab in my template selection. I have this publishing tab and that's what I'm gonna to use to create this new subsite based upon the publishing site template. So I'll select publishing site and if I scroll down, I'll see I have the same choice on this subsite as I did on my others.
Do I wish to inherit the same permissions? For this particular site, I'm gonna choose, use unique permissions and I'm also going to leave the navigation for the top link bar for the parent site set to no. That means I'm gonna have to create my own navigation. I'll click create to create this site. After this site is created, I'm automatically shown the people in groups page because when I created this site, I elected not to have it inherit permissions from it's parent.
So it says you need to create some new groups. It automatically creates a new group called company news members, of which I, as the site creator am a member as well as creates the group company news owners, of which I am also a member of that group. Later we'll need to come back and add other people to these groups so they can view this site as well. But for now, I'll click on okay. I'm seeing that this page has not been published yet, but that's okay.
I'm the only one who can see it and I've created my page successfully. To recap, we can create subsites in a couple of different ways. And as you may remember, I've mentioned that the exam may cover one or possibly both of the methods. So you can always create a subsite by going to site contents and creating your subsite from the bottom of that page or navigate to the sites and work spaces command, which you'll find underneath site administration.
Also remember that we need to pay attention when we create our subsites about whether we inherit the navigation elements, the quick launch on the left, and the global navigation at the top and whether we choose to have our new subsite inherit the same security level as our parent site.
