- [Narrator] One of the most important things you'll need to think about as you're configuring your company's SharePoint experience is your site collection architecture. Let's start by understanding what site collections are, and how they affect overall site management. In SharePoint Online, the top level for your company is the tenant. This will show up in the URL as companyname.sharepoint.com. Now, immediately under that are site collections. Each site collection contains a single top-level site, and possibly sub-sites, below it. In the past, it wasn't unusual for companies to have a single site, and then create sub-sites for anyone who needed a site of their own. However, the recommendation from Microsoft these days is to create site collections for different segments of your business. Although it means more effort, there are some definite advantages to this.
