- [Voiceover] Let's now turn our attention to Zone Scavenging and Aging. Zone Scavenging is used by Server 2012 R2 and earlier. It is a mechanism that's used to perform cleanup and removal of stale resource records within the DNS zone. Records accumulate in the zone database over time. With scavenging and aging, we can set specific settings for DNS zones so that we can remove old or stale records.
Zone Aging is a cleanup method that uses intervals to determine which records need removing. The two intervals it uses are the no-refresh and the refresh intervals. Resource record refresh is a DNS dynamic update where host name and IP do not change. In Zone Aging, the no-refresh interval is a period of time during which a resource cannot be refreshed. What this means is the record cannot be replicated or duplicated during this time and so this reduces the replication traffic that exists on the server.
The refresh interval is a period of time during which a resource record can be refreshed. Zone Scavenging is a cleanup method that occurs on a recurring interval. Zone Scavenging actually needs to be enabled on the DNS server before it can actually be used by the DNS server to clean out its zone. For zone scavenging to work, there's several requirements that need to be set. One: it needs to be enabled on a resource record, two: it needs to be enabled on the DNS zone where the record exists, and finally, it needs to be enabled on the DNS server hosting a primary copy of the DNS zone where the record is at.
Zone scavenging and aging is set-up in the DNS manager. So let's go ahead and look how we would go about doing that. The first thing you need to do is come up here to our server and we need to right-click on it. Now we have the option of setting Scavenge Stale Resource Records. If we click that, it brings up a dialog box ask us do we want to scavenge all stale records on the server. At this point we go ahead and say yes.
This enables zone scavenging on the entire server. Also at the server level, we can enable zone aging. So we click on the Zone Aging option and now we have the option to either turn it on or turn it off. By default it is off, so let's go ahead and turn it on. Now, what will happen, is the DNS server will be able to scavenge stale resource records. We also have the option of setting the no-refresh and refresh intervals.
By default the no-refresh interval is 7 and set to Days. We can drop down this menu and we can set it to Hours alternatively. Let's go ahead and just leave it at the default setting for now. Also, under refresh interval, this is also set at 7 and again we have the option to set Hours or Days and then a number. Now we've set scavenging for the entire server, let's go ahead and click OK.
And then, it's going to ask, do we want to apply these settings to the existing, active directory integrated zones. And I'm just going to go ahead and say yes; as you can see it's enabled here and I'm going to apply it to all my integrated zones. Now I'm going to click OK. I've now set aging and scavenging on all the zones on my DNS server. Also, I have the option of setting Zone Scavenging and Aging on the zone level. So I go to a zone I want to set it on, I right-click, then I come down here to Properties.
Under Properties, General tab, I have an Aging button here. If I click that, it brings up the same Zone AgingScavenging Properties dialog box we looked at earlier. The difference is, this time it's only set to the zone level. And so again, we can turn on Scavenging stale resource records, take our default settings, and click OK. And now click OK again.
In this way we have set Zone Scavenging and Zone Aging for both our server and our zone.
